He shouted back:  'You didn't lick me, Yank!'

He returned to a burned home and his family all killed or scattered.  He went west and became a sherriff in Colorado.  He would shoot you if you played the song 'Marching Through Georgia'  in his presence since he had witnessed first hand Yankee destruction of the South.  He also wore Confederate gray until the day he died.
