going through raul julia’s filmography atm;
and i am entirely entranced. and it is not
*just his ‘film —ography’ per say, but his thatric—
          al performances; specifically in tommy
tune’s classic directorial edition of ‘NINE’
          the musical (1982) and edwin sherin’s 1974
          directorial adaptation of shakespeare’s
‘KING LEAR. ( —alongside the great perfor
mances of james earl jones + rosalind cash
          and paul sorvino)

i just wish the video-graphed’ version of his,
          broadway performance of ‘DRACULA’ (via
          edward gorey’s 1977- ‘80 interpretation) was
          accessible….

everyone likes to talk about tom hanks’
          performance in philadelphia during the
‘opera scene’ but it’s denzel’s perfectly
silent balance of sympathy, and finally
compassion that intensifies the scene &
          enhances tom’s monologue— not to
          mention the score. under-acting. not
everyone can do it. quite phenomenal.

and denzel was really bold for taking
that role, not because it was the 90s,
but because of the intense homophobia
that resides in the black community—
and it was the 90s; early 90s at that. a
            pure gem in cinema. truly.
