          THEY looked like ravens, peering at her with dark eyes as they sat in the back corner of the room. There was all but one window, letting in a measly stream of the dull yellow afternoon light. In the corner of her eyes, she caught a flash of gold eyes glittering with complete and utter mischievousness. An indiscernible voice crept into her ears, velvet like ink. "You don't simply stumble into a raven's nest—unless you need something."
          
          "Tell me, do you know what a group of ravens is called?" The voice was cunning, almost slick with gasoline—just waiting to be set aflame. For a split second, she could see the faint glint of teeth, a smile one could say.
          
          "Unkindness."

          is it too much to ask, to hold hands not for the sake of expressing romanticism but just because i need to be physically reminded that i am not completely and utterly by myself
          
          i just want to be reminded that im not so alone, to be hugged so my chest can stop hurting so much by all of this heavy grief
          
          tell me my smile is not real
          tell me you know me well enough to see that im in so much hurt i can drown in it

          to all the times you saved me my favorite meals
          to all the memories of you handing me rock candy whenever i cried
          to all the moments you took me grocery shopping so you could by my favorite rice snack
          to all the times you caught me when i fell over riding my kiddie tricycle
          to all the days when you would remind me that i was your smartest grandchild (and the bestest of course)

The child stared at the masked villain, in wondrous fear and fearful amazement. The wicked black silver of his horns winked at him, and he could not help but stare in awe at the man.
          
          The villain stared down at the child, lips turned. The knife in his fist glimmered with ruby, stained with blood. Had the child known that it was his parents life that were lost to this very blade, would he be crying mercilessly. The man imagined the tip of the blade carving a smile into the child’s thin pale throat—it would be a cruel joke to let him live.
          
          But his heart, the wicked bastard it was, betrayed him. The villain found the words escaping his lips before he could stop them. “If you could choose, would you be a hero or a villain?” The darkening skies mourned in the colors of crimson, the air thick with unspoken lies and promises. 
          
          “A...hero.” The child pondered, before adding with a shy smile “then I can save my mom and dad from anything!”
          
          The horns on his mask dipped as the villain turned around and never looked back, leaving the child in quiet wonder, with a question that would soon be answered.
