Silas had counted three separate towns. The same face. The same impossible timing.

The same unsettling feeling of being watched—not with malice, but with… concern. He stopped halfway across the old bridge, letting the silence settle between them before speaking without turning around.

“…You’ve gotten better at hiding” a faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth “It almost worked.”

Velatrix didn't answer right away. Her molten eyes lingered on the river instead, watching the current pull broken branches downstream without hesitation. A slow breath left her as she folded her arms, her expression settling into that familiar, unreadable calm. "You're right," she admitted quietly. "It stopped feeling like just a job a long time ago." A faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips, though there was something undeniably sad beneath it. "You're frustratingly easy to care about, Silas. You have this habit of making people want to see tomorrow... even when they stopped believing in it themselves."

She finally looked at him, her gaze warm for only a fleeting second before the walls returned. "But that's exactly why I can't let you know how much." Her tone was gentle, almost apologetic. "The moment people become important to me, they become targets. I've watched that happen enough times to learn the lesson." She forced a crooked smirk back onto her face, nudging his shoulder just lightly. "So for both our sakes... let's keep pretending I'm only here because it's my job."

Silas let out the faintest huff of laughter, the sound more surprised than amused “…so I wasn’t imagining it” for a moment, he simply watched the river. The current slipped beneath the bridge with quiet determination, carrying leaves and broken branches alike without ever asking where they’d come from.

“I spent the first day convincing myself I was being paranoid.” His smile lingered, small and tired. “The second day, I figured maybe an angel had decided stabbing me was too much effort” he glanced sideways at her “the third day…” His shoulders rose in a small shrug. “…I started wondering if I’d accidentally made a friend.”

The word seemed to catch him off guard. His expression faltered almost immediately, as though he’d said something he hadn’t meant to.

“…Sorry” Silas rubbed the back of his neck, his gaze dropping to the weathered wooden planks beneath their feet “I know that’s… probably not what this is” silence settled between them again, comfortable enough that he didn’t feel compelled to fill it. Then her words returned to him.

《 “It’s my job to keep you alive.” 》

He frowned—not suspiciously, but thoughtfully “…can I ask you something?” His voice was gentle, carrying none of the bitterness most people expected from someone in his position.

“If it’s your job…” He searched for the right words. “Then why do you sound like you actually care whether I make it?” He finally met her eyes “I mean…” A sheepish smile returned. “You remind me to eat.”

“You’ve patched me up twice. You scared off those demons outside Carson without waiting for me to ask” a quiet pause “…that doesn’t feel like a job.”

His fingers curled around the worn railing as a breeze stirred his dark hair “It feels…” He hesitated, almost afraid to finish the thought. “…like lonely people looking after each other” the sentence hung between them before he offered an apologetic smile, as if embarrassed by his own optimism.

“…Or maybe I’m just hoping that’s what it is.”

Velatrix stepped from the shadows with the same quiet ease she'd always possessed, offering him an almost offended look at the compliment. "Almost?" she echoed, one brow arching. "I was never hiding." She came to a stop beside him, folding her arms as her molten gaze settled on the river below. "If I wanted to disappear, you wouldn't have counted three towns." A faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "I wanted you to know I was there." The admission came so casually it almost disguised what it meant. "It's my job to keep you alive, Silas. Watching you from a distance is considerably easier when you stop wandering into places that make protecting you unnecessarily complicated." She finally looked at him, amusement softening into something quieter. "Though I will admit... you've gotten much better at noticing me. I'm almost proud."

kind offer, however. i think i will be keeping my distance. everyone deserves their personal space. im sure you understand. ( a sheepish smile appeared on his lips as he folded his hands directly in front of him. )

[Velatrix's lips curved into a slow, amused smirk as she closed the distance by a single step, her molten gaze fixed comfortably on the priest.] Why don't you come a little closer and figure out exactly what doesn't sit right? [Her head tilted with effortless confidence, amusement flickering across her features.] It'd be a shame to leave a mystery unsolved.

[ sebastian pauses, unsure of how to even comfort her. he tried to understand hell and her duties but it was kind of foreign to him, more complicated than a regular case. he’d felt bad— if he’d understood her better, or tried to actually learn how to use his powers, maybe they wouldn’t be in this mess. frankly, he didn’t care about the humans as much as he should’ve; only her. he’d often wondered if that kind of ‘corruption’ was intended. ] i know you said i wasn’t causing any issues for you but (…) [ he pauses, tilting his head, lips pressing into a thin line as he could feel it start to quiver, ] i think i am. i thought i lost you and i just— laid there as the ground split under me. i didn’t even know what was happening or what you were doing but (…) it felt like, [ he could feel the disgusting tears leaving his eyes, almost thankful she turned away, ] like it wouldn’t have happened if i wasn’t there.

[Velatrix let out a slow breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, the molten gold of her eyes dimming until they settled into a weary burnt orange. For once there was no sharp retort, no crooked grin to shield herself behind. Her shoulders remained squared out of habit, but something beneath that practiced composure had quietly caved in.] I was sloppy. [The admission tasted bitter.] I lost control... and I almost put you in danger, Seb. Hurt or not, that should never have happened. [Her gaze drifted away from him, jaw tightening as though she couldn't bear to meet his eyes.] I've survived centuries by being precise—by never making mistakes like that. [A long silence followed before she spoke again, her voice quieter, heavier.] And the moment you were involved... I failed. [Shame settled over her features with an unfamiliar weight, not loud or dramatic, but painfully restrained, as though she believed she deserved every ounce of it.] I don't know which part of that I hate more.

“ right, how could i forget that you’re deranged enough to read kirk and spock smut out of spite. ” he replies, eyes rolling. he throws his hands up, she’d already started reading it and thankfully he was glad he didn’t have the tells of a living breathing human because his face would be beat red by now. “ go ahead and read it. just don’t (…) don’t laugh. ” most of the pages were littered with question marks and circles of vela’s likes and dislikes. his memory had gotten spotty when remembering the past and he wondered if it would be the same now, so many of his drabbles were scribbled late at night when he was both at his most alert and disorganized.

"Star Trek fanfiction?" Velatrix repeated slowly, her brows lifting as she stared at him with such exaggerated disbelief that it bordered on insulting. Then, without breaking eye contact, she casually opened the notebook. "You know, Seb, for a detective, you're a remarkably terrible liar." A wicked grin spread across her face as she lowered her gaze toward the first page, curiosity now thoroughly piqued. "But please, don't let me interrupt. I'm dying to see what kind of deeply embarrassing intergalactic romance you've apparently been hiding from me."

“ okay… ” he lifts his arms as she presses it closer to her chest with a small smile, “ you caught me it’s actually star trek fanfiction that i was writing because i was bored. you caught me. ” he jokes, though he was sure that would only make her want to read it even more. truthfully, he was unsure with how comfortable she’d be with all of what he’d written; the kind, the observant, the panic ridden scribbles. “ very bad star trek fanfiction too. just— awful. ”

[Velatrix snorted as she swung one leg off her motorcycle, pulling off her gloves with practiced ease before tucking them beneath the seat. The grin that spread across her face was equal parts smug and insufferable.] Half dead and bloody? Careful, Jack. Someone might think you’re hoping for a snack. [She shot him a sideways glance, one brow arching.] Though I suppose if I end up bleeding all over the place, it’ll save you the trouble of asking nicely. [A quiet laugh escaped her before she rolled her shoulders, her expression settling into something far more focused as her gaze drifted toward the manor looming across the fields.] Fine. I’ll wait for the wards to drop. [She gave him a single nod, flexing her fingers as though already imagining the fight ahead.] Just don’t take too long. I’d hate to kill everyone before you get the chance to prove all that confidence wasn’t just for my benefit.

[ there were parked just close enough to see the manor in the horizon, standing proudly in a field of smaller sheds and houses most likely used for their sadistic rituals. jack turns to vela, who he’d ridden alongside, him in his car and her on her bike with a glare, trying to prevent an eye roll. ] i wouldn’t let them kill you— but i’m sure you’re much nicer half dead and bloody. [ jack smiled just the same, grabbing two glass eyes and getting out of the car. they flicker between the appearance of eyes and marbles. he mutters a quick spell, rolling the eyes together, the faint sound of glass in the background. ] these will help me see the runes around the area so i can disarm them.

[ without another word, he rolls one of the eyes far across the acres of land, making sure it was close enough to the main house in the center. ] you’ll feel when the runes come down. after that, i won’t be far behind.
