yeah,  they  probably  will.  it  doesn't  really  bother  me  since  i  don't  care  much  about  that.  they  might  think  you're  a  loser  for  hanging  out  with  one,  you  know.  [  his  gaze  travels  back  to  meet  hers,  finally  lifting  off  the  book  he  had  in  his  hands—-  something  about  insects.  he  really  just  reads  whatever  (interests  him).  ]  rumours  don't  bother  me.  @atecrow

background:  AS A CHILD, having grown up in the dusky plains in the city's southernmost province,  hiccup enjoyed a relatively peaceful and calm upbringing.  during his childhood,  he was perhaps a tad eccentric,  others deeming him as the "weird" child,  the same as an adult.  the shift occurred after his father,  who raised him in opposition to the dragoneir's views,  decided it would be 'best' if he left.  hiccup was left in disarray and experienced situations no preadolescent boy should live through.  in exchange for his father,  hiccup forced himself to undergo several trials to prove his loyalty to his mother and not be cast out by the people of his village.  he complied to the orders.  and over the years,  he grew more and more determined and frustrated with his situation:  how could the village expect him to grow and hate dragons without knowing anything about them?  murdering and stealing and destroying whatever they could relating to the rich creatures.  one fateful night,  he chose to leave everything behind.  he set fire to his home,  watched as people screamed in terror,  woken from their peaceful slumber and finding themselves surrounded by flames.  he waited until they left the night and dragged his mother to safety,  and then took his belongings and deserted the area in search of another place to be,  another life to live.  in their struggle for survival,  hiccup took on many different jobs,  anything to make it through another day,  until he eventually arrived to the capital and earned himself a place among the dragoneirs rather swiftly.  his mother met a man from the pihl family,  and the two kicked it off shortly. he met his new sister,  the two decided to get along for the sake of their parents.  there’s nobody as fiercely loyal to a cause as hiccup — and nobody as intensely devoted to somebody who understands him.
