in the book of bill it's basically confirmed that Dipper and Mabel were sent away for the summer because their parents were having... issues. which explains a lot about them as characters, both Dipper and Mabel are glaring instances of the two different reactions to an unstable family situation (which is only later exacerbated by Ford and Stan, who ALSO did not have a stable situation growing up). Dipper focuses on facts and logic to try and cope with the uncertainty, and Mabel focuses on emotions because facts and logic don't apply to the situation she's in (again, shown with their oft compared dialogue of 'trust no one, trust no one!' and 'Grunkle Stan, I trust you'). but they BOTH love each other so much. And here's the real kicker, the reason they survive is because they've received unconditional love and support from Ford and Stan and their friends. NIETHER STAN NOR FORD RECIEVED THAT WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG (not from anyone but their mother, who despite trying her best, couldn't provide all the support they needed). and really that's what saved the world, two teens in a fucked up spot with love the world had told them they couldn't have.
