he kept silent a moment, testing really if it was a hunch or that they actually knew they were being followed. but that constant buzz in the back of his skull said he was definitely spotted.
for most people, this would be unsettling. the silence of how he moved out from the shadows above and just so casually lowered down to the floor. only making a sound when he patted off the dust from his cost. " can't help but be curious of newcomers. especially those who seem more than human and just happen to show when a lot of strange things started happenin' all over. " and he was casual about it, like he wasn't some quiet hunter just moments ago.

he waited behind, sitting on one of the crates backstage and well out of the way of anyone else. just enjoying the music that came through to the back. he never realised how easily the sound of the crowd pulled through back there. maybe intentional to hear discussions better. probably why she was so quick to pick up on the tension, too. but it was a lovely show. he can't remeber when last he heard a voice sing in person. he'd been mostly listening to old records for as long as he can remember.

he wasn't really expecting her to be so close and comfortable considering all she has seen he was able to do. it was a sort of gentleness he didn't really ever know. after all, he grew up with just his uncle and only ever really had men in his close circle. he wasn't sure if this was just kindness or a quiet hint he wasn't really ready to see. " I don't mind at all, angel. long as the star of the show doesn't mind it. " as if to make sure that he wasn't intruding or presuming he was even allowed this.

peter definitely joined him, rummaging for his own smokes before lighting one. a habit he never seems able to quit. " yeah, got tired of them twistin' stories. what got me most mad is glorifyin' the monsters and makin' the victims a foot note in it all. " it got under his skin. enough to even sour his mood just thinking about it. all those fights with his boss and the publishers. all for nothing. now he can do what mattered to him at least. something he was very thankful for. he quietly went through his notes, drinking his black coffee before sliding a page over. " ever seen markings like this? found out it is a poppy flower, though badly drawn. there was one at out case site too. also a similar one three weeks back on my other job with the same situation. "

peter felt bad for the kid. shock was a hard thing to get over, especially at such a young age. now all these people were hassling him too. " look, please call me should you have any trouble further with this. sleeplessness and anxiety especially. it is a nasty thing to get through. " well, they are lookin' for the guy who did it, but I just want to know what happened and who was involved. the vicitms deserve far more recognition, but almost always get forgotten. " he was blut about it, but made his words honest. he wouldn't beat around the bush on his work and his motivations. people deserved to know more than just the monster who caused all this mess. the families and loved ones of those hurt or lost should also get their voice in the matter. The city felt wrong.

Not because it was old—Kara had seen old cities before—but because this one seemed to remember things it should have forgotten. The brick buildings groaned under the weight of decades, neon lights flickered like dying stars, and somewhere beneath it all was the steady heartbeat of a world trying very hard not to look into the dark. Then she saw him.

A shape in black perched on the edge of a water tower, utterly motionless. The wind caught the coat around his shoulders, but he didn’t move with it. He looked less like a man and more like a gargoyle carved from midnight. For a moment, the thing living quietly behind Kara’s eyes stirred.

《 That one has seen monsters before 》

She landed softly on the opposite rooftop, cape settling around her ankles as she tilted her head toward the masked stranger.

“You know,” she said after a long silence, “most people look at me like they’ve seen a ghost” her gaze lingered on the white lenses of his mask “you’re looking at me like you’re trying to decide if I’m one.”

" ye got a name or alias ye answer by? most folks here took to just callin' me the spider. " and honestly he preferred it over "spider-man". that just made him sound like a circus attraction more than anything.

he gave a soft huff, not too sure himself if it was relief or something closer to a laugh. it seems like the whole world just keeps getting bigger each time he looks. he would carefully stand, somehow keeping balance on the watertower's railing like he was magnetised to it. rummaging for his pack of smokes before just tucking it back after a second thought. it was his last one for the month, so it had to keep a few more days. that, or debate weather, another pack is worth more than food. " guess that happens more often than I thought... " part of him was convinced all that mess was some dream. something sleepless nights and drinks made up for him. after all, another universe surely couldn't be real, right? despite the blind eye he has been turning to proof, there was no denying someone flying out of nowhere and talking about a rift he briefly remembers.

" sorry dame, don't think we really have stuff that makes doorways to other worlds. could be wrong ... " he stayed put, not wanting to close the distance until he was sure all of this could be trusted. a habit that saved his skin a few good times. that familiar buzz kept climbing. she might be kind and mean no harm, but that sense was telling him just how easily she can tear someone apart with little to no effort. that old god gave him a lot, but he trusted this power more than his own eyes. had good reason to never doubt it.

" mind describin' the thing you were followin'? might be able to help. then again, ye might have just been thrown in here as a trap. " kind of a cruel place to put anyone from the modern world. smack in the middle of the great depression. though, he was never one to shy away from strange new things. like it screwed at his nerves if he just walked on by or ignored something clearly out of place.

For a second, Kara simply watched him. Not his stance—though she noticed the careful way he held himself, balanced like someone who expected the world to throw the first punch. Not the mask either, or the long coat that made him look as though he’d stepped out of one of those black-and-white detective films Clark was oddly fond of.

She listened. His heartbeat was steady. Human. Tired, but steady. Beneath it was something else she couldn’t quite name, a strange thread woven through his existence that reminded her of old magic and older stories. Not cosmic. Not alien. A survivor’s soul, wrapped in the shape of a spider. Kara’s smile was faint, more curious than amused. The wind tugged at the edge of her cape, carrying with it the scent of rain, old brick, and something metallic lingering in the streets below.

“A lost soul?” she echoed softly, as though she were testing the words. Her gaze drifted briefly toward the skyline, toward buildings that seemed to lean just a little too close together. “Maybe” the answer came easier than she expected “I was chasing something.” Her voice lowered, almost swallowed by the city around them. “A place between worlds tore open, and I followed it here. Things like that…” she paused, eyes unfocusing for the briefest instant “…don’t usually come through alone.”

When she looked back at him, there was an odd sort of honesty in her expression. No bravado. No threat. Just the quiet weariness of someone who had spent too long carrying impossible things “but trouble?” The corner of her mouth lifted ever so slightly. “I try very hard not to be.”

The dimensional jump had ended with concrete instead of a battlefield. Sable stood in the middle of a narrow alley, one hand pressed against the brick wall to steady herself while her healing factor fought to catch up. Rain dripped from her hair, washing streaks of blood down her sleeves.

The city didn’t look right. The cars were too old. The buildings were older. Even the air felt different. She’d barely managed to regain her footing before she felt it. Someone was watching. Slowly, she turned toward the shadow at the mouth of the alley. Her hand settled on the hilt of the sword still strapped to her back.

“…You’ve been standing there long enough to either help or shoot me,” she observed, her voice even despite the exhaustion. “I’m starting to think you’re just being rude.”

chainsmoke

he almost didn't believe it at first. a small earthquake followed by someone literally falling out of thin air. peter almost had himself convinced it was one too many light nights making him see things. but it was unsettling. undeniably real. the smell of blood and the horrible sound of bones snapping back together is one he knew too well to be hallucinating. he was careful when stepping out. his concealed gun holster, under his coat, was unclipped just in case. " don't mean to be rude ma'am, but last time I checked ... people don't just fall from the sky and stand up like nothin' happened. "

and if someone were to tell him about this, he would laugh it off. there was just making no sense of it. his senses were buzzing. not danger, but not human by any means. not anymore. no matter how "normal" she looked at first glance. he wouldn't be hostile. not unless given a reason to be. in all honesty, he was a bit exhausted and didn't feel up for a fight right now.

" doubt yer an angel, so where exactly did ye come from? " he had a very notable brooklyn accent, almost cheesy sounding to someone modern given the 30's definitely had a unique sound. combined with a low voice you'd expect to see in old detective films. cliché if it wasn't the norm for this world and time.
