It always makes me sad that back in the 70s/80s the music industry was so homophobic and rock/metal/punk culture was hypermasculine and toxic,

Like, the amount of rockstars who were likely lgbtqia+, especially having close relationships with band members and being on the road, who were likely closeted or at least quietly bisexual, pansexual or bi-curious is so many (imo). Statistically impossible that all of them were straight (ik Steven Adler, Kirk Hammett and such are out already.) And the only people who actually really gave a damn about it were the people pulling the strings, like management, labels and PR - pushing the 'macho/ladies man' image onto rockers who were probably sensitive or not straight.

The amount of gay couples we have/potentially lost is deeply unfair and damaging to have every romantic or playful flirtation between musicians or bandmates labelled as 'shock value' or 'bro stuff' :((

Ya'll, let me know if you agree because it's been a subject that has been bugging me for a while

@SurprisedJoe I agree, it looked hugely homophobic and toxic and overly masculine. It's erasure to those sexualities (bi-erasure is already a big enough issue and I can imagine pansexuals get overlooked even more).

It's interesting for the rockstars that did come out at a more homophobic time. Like Elton John - I mean, that's pretty big. But then again, even conservative, anti-gay / anti-LGBTQIA+ leaders of countries love Elton, so it may just be his personality?? Not sure entirely.

Environment matters too, of course, or maybe it's also just people being smart enough to realize that you can't change that about someone. (Take the rest of Queen, for example - Freddie being interested in men [and I say it that way as to not erase the possibility of him being bisexual instead of just saying a gay man] as well wasn't an issue to them because otherwise they wouldn't be a band if it mattered.
