When asked about his background and what led him to be a writer and English teacher, S.A. Merk gave the following anecdote:

As a young boy, he couldn't get enough of those dime store novels allowing each page to take him away to worlds and galaxies filled with monsters and aliens. But he began to notice that many of these cheap novels were written poorly or in haste as authors and publishers tried to take advantage of the rich marketplace. He began to wonder if his love for science fiction and fantasy was a lost cause. 

But one day, he complained to his dad that the ending of his last novel "stunk" and his father replied, "then rewrite it." At first, he thought his dad was just trying to get him to write rather than read, but that night he picked up a pen and notebook and rewrote the ending...and another. And soon, his love of writing evolved from a simple desire for well-told stories.

He spent the last few decades developing a love for well-told stories, reading and writing in certain genres, science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, thriller, mystery, and a few others. Off to a rather late start, he is know trying to share his work with a larger audience and hopes to have his first novel out this year.
