The chess scene shows that you know how to plant tension in a simple gesture and let the reader draw their own conclusions, and that is harder to teach than any pacing adjustment. If the rest of the book treats Kael, the crew, and Caden himself with the same care you gave Shin, Vortex War of Nine Skies has a very solid foundation to grow from.
