This an attempt to create a brand new sub-genre of psychological horror.

Right now there are only two psychological horrors dealing with the phenomena of SHC (Spontaneous Human Combustion). That is, that we could find. If you, or any other writers already have SHC-themed psychological horrors written, let us know! We want those books on our public reading lists! :)

Why create a sub-genre just for SHC-themed psychological horror?

First, is it really any more specific than any of the other sub-genres out there? Steampunk, Mythpunk, Swords and Sorcery, etc?

Secondly, here's why we love SHC-themed stories:

-The symbolism. Fire is always symbolic of both destruction and rebirth. SHC can build on fire's symbolism, but it also lends itself well to symbolism of self-destruction. SHC is beautiful decoration for "Man versus Himself" plots. 

-SHC is right on that line between paranormal and psychological. Is it a real phenomena? Is it completely made up? That's all up to you as the writer.There are many strong arguments supporting the existence of SHC. There are also plenty of arguments that appear to "debunk" this theory. So, is SHC real? For literary purposes, it doesn't matter. You can successfully incorporate Spontaneous Human Combustion into a story, using either of these possibilities. 

-It has that ick! factor. SHC is gross. Seriously. Do not google image search this stuff. You've been warned. But you can put all of that grossness into your story. SHC is a creative way to evoke disgust and shock in your readers. What is grosser than a human body burning to death from the inside? Then human fat melting and resolidifying? What's more gut-wrenching then the Wick Effect-the human spine acting as if it is a candle wick, letting fire travel throughout the body.
