We all need some creative outlet in our lives. For me, it is writing (also painting, gardening, landscape design, but I digress).
Our society is so entrenched in the left brain that it is unhealthy. That is why outlets such as Wattpad are so great! You can see by how many people flock here, how deep the creative need is. Escaping into the right brain for a few hours is deeply renewing.
I love the wilderness and venture into the remote parts of northern Canada when ever I can. Here I find the most rare and precious thing: the land the way it was when it was created. Untouched by the deforming presence of humans! And it is here that I have found the inspiration for my books.
There is much power to be found in the "spiritual" places. Native peoples in all countries know about this. Places where the veil between the ordinary world and the spirit world is thin and where wondrous, magical things can happen.
As a child I was influenced by Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" series and the timeless conflict between good and evil which she explored. I also loved Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" and Lois Lowry's "The Giver."
It is these worlds of magic and wonder, danger and courage, that I create and explore in my books.
