Even putting that aside though, there have been many stories removed that didn’t involve minors. I have a friend whose work got removed. I read it myself before it was removed and they were adults above the age of consent by American standards and the smut was only every few chapters. She had other stories they removed too, but those went by Canadian rules. I know another person, neolfanfic, who had ALL of her stories taken down and she only wrote mature themes with adults, definitely never younger than 18— I’m pretty sure they were all in their 20s.
For some of the stories, Wattpad didn’t just take them down, they deleted them. People spend a lot of time writing this stuff, it’s one thing to flag it and another to wipe it from existence. On TikTok when a video is perceived to have violated the code of conduct, they take it down with a flag explaining what the violation was according to any report they may have received at which point the content creator either accepts or denies the claim. If denied, TikTok reviews the video and either reinstates it recognizing it as a mistake on their part or keeps it with the same flag so people know how to correct in the future. Also, every video made is automatically saved to photos even if it was created on the app, so basically the app grants a copy of the work to the creator so they haven’t just scrapped something they worked on for God only knows how long. I think Wattpad should adopt a similar policy.
