hi guys if you didn't know ViacomCBS has announced its partnership with Wattpad, using the website to mine for stories to adapt into original series for streaming services like Paramount Plus.
Wattpad already works with SyFy, Sony Pictures, and Hulu, but there's a difference. Those platforms are offered stories by Wattpad or pick stories by their popularity. These are stories that have already blown up and are identifiable by large amount of readers.
The ViacomCBS deal however allows viacomcbs to look through Wattpad stories and pick whenever one they want, then use it however (quite possibly in an exploitative manner)
This isn't a "win"
It's a company stealing ideas from the hardwork of others. They could easily hire screenwriters who are in their target age group, or if they wanna utilise Wattpad so much, offer screenwriter positions to writers whose book they want to reference/adapt/use. How about hiring writers instead of 'mining' their work?
Not only that, there's no clarification on whether the original works uploaded directly on Wattpad, if adapted, would translate in proper credit and monetary compensation to the original author. One can assume that the stories are going to get ripped off and credited to the show runners who are going to earn money from recognition that isn’t theirs, especially if said stories aren't that well known.
On Wattpad, often there are reuploads of things written on other websites without the original author's permission. Under this new policy, a potential broadcasting company could pick up one of those reuploaded-without-consent works and the original author might not come to know about it at all and even if they do and claim copyright, the process takes a long time.
Wattpad has essentially laid out thousands of original stories for some big company to rip off and use for shows.
