Catullus: “You ask how many of your kisses, Lesbia”

          Quaeris, quot mihi basiationes
          tuae, Lesbia, sint satis superque.
          quam magnus numerus Libyssae harenae
          lasarpiciferis iacet Cyrenis
          oraclum Iouis inter aestuosi
          et Batti ueteris sacrum sepulcrum;
aut quam sidera multa, cum tacet nox,
          furtiuos hominum uident amores:
          tam te basia multa basiare
uesano satis et super Catullo est,
          quae nec pernumerare curiosi
          possint nec mala fascinare lingua.

          .

You ask how many of your kisses, Lesbia
are more than enough for me.
How many grains of Libyan sand
          has the stink-weed Sahara cast
between the oracle of sweating Jove
and old King Battus’ holy tomb?
Or when the night is quiet
          how many stars look down
          on the liaisons of lovers?
More than enough for your crazy Catullus
          would be more kisses kissed
          than the curious could calculate
or the wicked tongued know to hex.

To honor Halloween, Gizmodo and io9 are presenting a very special editorial package focused on death in its many forms—we’ll be running essays, investigations, and a work of short fiction on what goes on beyond the veil. And as part of it, io9 is announcing an open call for works of short, speculative fiction that interrogate what death might mean, or be, in the future.

@seasofme Oh dear. Today I got a note to say 'you are prevented from interacting with this user.' She must have blocked me for some reason. I would not have offended her for the world, but perhaps I have. I'll leave her alone. Pass on my apologies if you have the opportunity. :(

@seasofme I will persist. It must be just one of those odd Wp things.

Merry Christmas all. Joyous celebration of whatever else brings you peace and happiness. Have a grand time with all those you love, and if you cannot be with them for any reason at all, remember how wonderful you are yourself and celebrate that. Laugh and smile and dance and sing and eat whatever you have with a glad heart. Slàinte mhath! Hug someone.
