Also, self-taught mechanic (might be a stretch) but Ruby mentions that Signal teaches their students to make weapons, meaning she (Ruby) has formal mechanical training. And the aura in the jar is RED, which allows her to use Ruby's semblance since it's her power in the jar. Man, I was beginning to wonder at the mention of the scar but now it all makes sense.
