@KaptnKath Ahhhh thank you for the recommendation ❤ I feel so bad now because I did read that book or the first one at least and I really don't mean this as offense to anyone who liked it.. but let's just say the writing and characters were too cringe for me. I also read another retelling, A Thousand Nights, and couldn't get through that one either. Like I said, I've been craving a good retelling for a loooonggg long time T.T

@sahrastorm You should try the Wrath and the Dawn series, it's a retelling of the Thousand and One Nights and focuses on the story of the girl who marries the emperor (instead of the short stories she tells him like in the original Arabian Nights).

The way you write has that gift where your characters feel alive it’s so vivid I could picture it playing out like a scene in my head.

This short story is a reimagining of a local folktale, JAKA TARUB AND THE SEVEN APSARAS, about a man who steals a nymph's shawl and eventually ends up being the patriarch of the kingdom of Mataram. I always thought as a child ... huh, am I just tripping or did he not manipulate a woman into having a child with him? No one gonna talk about that part?
