// hi this is the au where bucky gets out sooner and is there when steve wakes up

Steve was confused. More so than that, he was very upset.
The sound of a Brooklyn Dodgers game played through an old radio was the first thing he became aware of after registering the bright lights from all around him. This place was no hospital. It felt like a movie set, or a weird dream.
There was no way Steve Rogers survived that plane crash.
As he panicked and ran away from the armed agents chasing after him, Steve felt like he could cry. He wasn’t wearing shoes and he was out in the street causing a traffic jam and there were bright, bright colored lights and signs, and new, sleeker cars, and people wore different clothes, and there were streetlights every twenty feet instead of every three hundred feet and Steve was so /afraid/. He found himself hyperventilating as car horns honked around him, and he covered his ears, squeezing his eyes shut tightly— that is, until he felt a hand on his shoulder and realized the feeling was one that transcended time. He opened his eyes and lifted his head to look at the newcomer, and then his expression turned from paralyzing fear to absolute shock. “B-Bucky?”

Steve stared in utter disbelief, his eyes wide as saucers and his jaw about to hit the ground. Then it registered that he really was looking at his best friend, and he smiled as bright as the sun, throwing his arms around Bucky and burying his face in his shoulder. “You idiot,” he laughed wetly, pulling back to look at him. “You /idiot/, Bucky Barnes, I knew there wasn’t a thing in this world that could keep you down. Where have you been?” He paused and looked around, and his smile faltered a little. “And… how long has it been? This… this can’t be New York…”

bucky felt his heart race when he met the blonde’s eyes, lifting his hands so he could see them. he offered a weak smile. “ hey, steve, ” he murmured quietly, trying not to allow the tears gathering slowly in his eyes to slip. “ it’s been a hell of a long time . . . ”
