Stars-Lynn Gunn

"Perfect." I stood back and admired the backyard setup I had successfully finished before ___ came over to lay under the stars with me. I took advantage of the alone time I had now and laid down on the blanket staring out at the starry sky above me. "Wow." I sat up and turned my attention towards ___ who was standing behind me gazing at the sights in front of her. I smiled at her and waved her over to me. She laid down on the blanket and stared at the night sky as I had done previously.

"Did you plan all this Lynn?"

I looked down at ___ and smiled shyly. A faint blush starting to creep its way on my cheeks with every passing minute.

"Yeah. I wanted to surprise you."

"Haha, you surely mastered that one Lynn. I love it."

I laid down beside ___ and found my eyes creeping their way over to her features. I wanted so badly to tell her that I was in love with her, but I couldn't find the courage to do so. So for now, I just kept my feelings to myself.

"Hey, Lynn?"

"What's going on sugarplum?"

"Have you ever wondered what would happen if we burned out and became stars too? Wouldn't you like the fact that you know your place and have a place in the sky? When people come to stargaze they look up and see you shining brightly down at them?"

___'s mind never failed to amaze me. I was always fascinated with what kind of knowledge and vast unknown was swirling around in her head.

"No, I haven't actually. I think that's an interesting point that you bring up. Who wouldn't want to be a star and have a place where they belong and fit in?"

"You read my mind, Gunn. You just get me. Why can't we be our own stars in the night sky?"

I looked over at ___ with a quizzical look on my face. Not understanding where she's trying to get at.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, we could be stars Lynn; just you and I. We can be the shining stars that shine brightly down at people. We can be our own stars because we don't need to find our place when we already have a place."

I just stared at ___ and smiled at her. We both broke out in laughter and crazy banter. We stayed like that wrapped in each other's arms staring into each other's eyes. ___ brushed loose strands of hair that fell over my face behind my ear. She leaned in and kissed the tip of my nose while giggling. I couldn't help but laugh along with her. I rubbed my thumb in circular motions along her hip bone intently listening to her steady breathing. Nothing was more perfect than being in this exact moment with her.

"I love you, Lynn. I want to be your shining star and I want you to be my shining star."

I couldn't believe I had heard those words come out of her mouth. I nearly didn't believe she said them to me.

"Of course I'll be your shining star and you'll be mine. You have no idea how long I've waited to hear those words. You beat me to it."

That's how it all started. Stargazing in my backyard with the one I love. Letting all our worries fade away as we shine brighter together.
