Chapter 37
Danny stood in front of of Ellie's room, hearing the talking from the other side of the door. Taking a deep breath, he braced himself and knocked softly on the door. He knew he could just phase in but he knew better and both he and Sam had agreed to give Ellie her privacy which meant knocking at the door before entering.
When Sam opened the door, still in her ghost form, he saw the seriousness of the situation and nodded curtly. Making his way through the room he took notice of the way she seemed to decorate it. She had only been there a couple of days having stayed at their palace in the Zone prior to coming to his Mama's place.
Photos of her visits around the world along with photos of them as a family were up on the wall. Her queen sized bed made the small 8 year old look smaller than before making Danny want to leave her there where she can be safe.
But he can't and it kills him knowing that she's bound to get hurt once again because unfortunately that's the way life is.
A desk was at the end of the bed where a small box sat, wrapped up perfectly in space themed wrapping paper, a big silver bow place perfectly in the middle with a large tag saying:
To: Daddy
From: Your Family
And God, did that make him feel like a horrible father, especially for what he's about to do now.
Sighing, he walked to the bed where Ellie rested under her teal covers, sniffling every now and then. David and Vincent were at her side with Tucker, but as soon as Danny came into their view they stepped aside and went over to Sam, who was at the end of the young girls bed.
“Honey? Can you please come out so we can talk?”
After about a minute, the small girl slowly came out from her safe space, hair now a mess with red puffy eyes. Her small nose had a red tinge to it as she continued to sniffle and a small frown decorated her facial features.
It broke Danny's heart knowing he was partially at fault for this.
“Oh Ellie,” Danny said softly causing the young girl to burst into tears again and launch herself to her father's arms and into a bear hug.
“She called me an abomination,” Ellie whimpered into Danny's shoulder as he gently rocked the girl back and forth.
“You're not an abomination Ellie nor a mistake. You're my baby girl, and one of the greatest gifts I ever received from this life. What she said was wrong. I love you darling and nothing will ever change that. Okay?”
The girl nodded as she backed away slightly from her father, “she said that you didn't want kids, is that true?”
Danny felt his heart sink and his breathing get caught in his throat. Letting out a strangled sigh, he turned his head before turning it back to his daughter, tears now apparent in his eyes.
“Yes, it's true.”
There were sounds of gasps around the room from his family but nothing was worse than hearing Sam and Danielle both utter, “What?” in such a small voice, breaking his heart over again.
However, he did not break eye contact from his daughter who seemed to be more distraught than she had before. She kept muttering the word ‘no’ while shaking her head rapidly as Sam quickly went to the side Danny wasn't on to hug her daughter.
“Yes, when I was 15 Maddie asked me if I wanted children in the future and I said no.”
“Stop-”
