Sand. That's all Lucy could see. Endless miles of sand, and dust, and nothing. She'd grown used to the sight over time. The scene of endless decay and debris that was now her home. Everyone's home.

It had been a few years since the destruction of Bricksburg. Those strange creatures invaded their city literally moments after the Master Builders had managed to defeat Lord Business. They thought they'd won the war, that everything was resolved and they could live freely. But no, Taco Tuesday was just the beginning. Then they attacked, these colourful beasts that couldn't speak any sort of coherent English. They just made these silly little noises, like a new born baby. She could still hear them giggling as they crushed the city and obliterated everything in sight until it was unrecognisable. There was no negotiating with them, no mercy. The horror of it all still kept her awake at night, sweating in fear as she recalled the events in her head. The memories just replayed over and over for months until she eventually learnt to hide her anxieties and insecurities like she did with all her other problems. She'd watched her home be destroyed after she'd already lost so much in her lifetime. Everybody had changed, altered themselves to adjust to the new life they all shared. It was like Mad Max had become a reality. They lived in a desert, carried weapons around like everyday objects, wore a LOT of chains. If only Vitruvius was still alive, he'd have known what to do. He always knew what to do. But he wasn't, and that meant she had to step up, take charge, as did all the other master builders.

Well...nearly all of them.

She told herself she couldn't blame him, he was new to the whole "hero" thing when they'd been attacked. But at the same time she just didn't understand how Emmet could be so optimistic about it all. How could he still smile, still sing, still be himself? The invasion hadn't changed him in the slightest. He still saw the good in life, which in some cases Lucy supposed was a good character trait to have. It was better to be positive in these situations as opposed to negative, but there was positivity and then plain ignorance and stupidity. It angered her a little that he wasn't taking everything as seriously as everybody else was. He was in a fantasy, not reality. He was still living in the dystopian and controlled world prior to Taco Tuesday. It's like he'd never woken up from the daze he was in. But...why?!

The ravenette sighed and sat down on the ledge of the platform she sat on, her legs dangling. Her dirty hands slipped away from the bent and broken railing and landed in her lap. Her protective headgear kept her from getting sand in her hair and eyes, meaning she could stare out at the emptiness and wouldn't go blind.

She could honestly say she never expected things to get this bad. Growing up in a separated and divided world was terrible enough, but an apocalyptic one? Maybe they should've just accepted whatever Lord Business had planned. Sure they would've been dead but some people would've escaped the Kragle, they would've made a rebellion, fought back. Things would go back to normal with time for furniture generations. They would never have gotten to see it though. But this? This would take many generations of work to fix, in fact it may not ever go back to how it was. They'd forever be stuck in this sea of sand and broken buildings until the sun exploded and humanity died out. What a joyous way for all known life to end. Surrounded by misery and waste.

Lucy was fairly certain the only person who'd be content dying in a wasteland like this would be Emmet. Death is a sad thing, but he'd find some way to put a positive spin on it. Emmet was good like that. Making even the saddest things in life that bit better and less harder to swallow. He was a good person like that. Funny she was saying that now, despite years ago thinking he was the most irritating human in the planet. She supposed she thought that still sometimes, but as time had gone on he'd grown on her. She'd left Batman for him. Yeah, the Batman. She didn't know why, but there was something about Emmet that she was more drawn to. Sure, Batman was cool, had a great taste in music, and in general was just awesome. But Emmet was something else. He was special. Literally, he is the special, but she meant it less in a "save the world" kinda way and more in a "I love you" kinda way.

She remembered when he found the piece of resistance instead of her, she was so upset, so angry. She'd trained for that moment her whole life, become a Master Builder, risked her life. And then this random guy just came along and found it. Found it like it was a misplaced TV remote. It was what made her resent him so much when they'd met. She thought it was awesome when she'd first met him, thinking he was some superhero that had come to save them all. But no, just a regular old Joe. Typical. But he'd learnt, and grown. He sacrificed himself for every other Master Builder, as well as the entirety of Bricksburg, despite how badly everyone talked about him.

Hm, maybe his optimism and relentlessness was a good thing then.

Speaking of the brunette, he was probably on his way back from the coffee shop right now. He'd come home, sing hello upon entering, hand her a coffee with a grin and then water his plant, whatever he called it. Something stupid. Lucy smirked and rolled her eyes.

With one final exhale of breath, the freckled girl pushed herself up on her feet. She dusted her trousers off a little, not that it would matter as it would get dusty again in a matter of minutes. She began making her way down the now worthless and dented tower that was surrounded with rubble and made her way back to her home. Back to Emmet.

She needed to talk to him, have a really serious talk with him about the situation. She didn't like how he was responding to this current crisis, and although she was slightly peeved with him, she was also looking forward to seeing him. She'd been out all day with UniKitty, Benny and Batman (wait, didn't Batman have a kid in Gotham to be raising? What was he doing here when he could be at home?). They'd be trying to find parts, scavenging for remains and trying to rebuild civilisation. Believe it or not, that was tiring work. Emmet stayed behind to act as a leader, but uh, it was fair to say he wasn't that great at it. He was more of a one time wonder when it came to leadership and taking initiative.

Whatever, it meant she had at least one thing to look forward to every day. One thing left.
