Twenty five??
Peggy got home and kicked off her shoes by the door. Shrugging off her coat, she hung it on the rack and headed to her and Maria's room.
"Maria, you home?" She called, removing her hair from its loose bun and using the brush from her dresser to comb out the knots. Maria ran into the room, tripping over her own feet a bit. Peggy chuckled, "Why are you in such a rush?"
Maria steadied herself,
"We are going out, pack your swimmers and put on something comfortable." She said before hurrying out of the room again. Peggy, a little confused, set down the brush and followed her girlfriend out of the room. Maria was in the lounge room slipping on her red vans, she looked up to Peggy.
"Hurry up, get dressed!" She squealed, jumping up from the couch and rushing Peggy back into the bedroom. Peggy shrugged, opening the closet and finding something casual.
She found a cute summer dress and tied her hair in a high ponytail, she tied up her converse and left the room to find Maria. Maria was still in the lounge room waiting for her.
"You look so cute," she told her, slinging her bag over her shoulder and grabbing the keys. She took Peggy's hand and they headed out to their car.
"So, where are we going?" Peggy asked as she climbed into the passenger's side.
"A few places," Maria hummed happily. "First, we're going somewhere to eat. You get to pick."
Peggy sighed. "Is this going to be like my birthday and every place I pick you say no and we end up just getting Maccas?"
"No, I promise you." Maria smiled. "Any place you want."
"Isn't it too early to go out?"
Maria shook her head. "Just think of it as lunch a few hours late."
Peggy, nodding, thought for a moment on where to go. "That cheap Thai place near the cinema."
"Great choice." Maria started driving, "We will go to the cheap Thai place near the cinema."
The girls sung along to the radio until they arrived at the restaurant. Maria got out quickly after she parked and rushed to open Peggy's door for her.
"What is this about?" Peggy asked, taking her hand and letting her lead her into the restaurant and to a table.
"What do you mean?" Maria handed her a menu.
Peggy opened the menu absentmindedly. "Well, what's the occasion? Why are we going out?"
Maria shrugged, "Can't we just have some fun and go out?" Peggy nodded,
"Yeah, I guess."
The girl's ordered their food and told each other about their day while they waited. They talked and joked about, Maria laughed a little too loud and they got a few stares from nearby tables. After their meals, Maria insisted on paying and they walked just down the road to the cinema. They watched the new Spider-Man movie and fangirled over Tom Holland.
It was only six in the evening when they got out of the movies, Peggy wondered now why she needed her swimmers and Maria told her they were going to the beach.
They changed into their swimmers in the public bathrooms and left their clothes and shoes in the car. They took turns carrying the beach bag as they walked along the shore until they found a nice spot with no other people.
The sun melted into the water as the sky painted itself in hues of purple, the ever slowly appearing stars decorating the sky like silver glitter. The waves were so small and slow that the water was almost still.
"Having fun?" Maria asked her girlfriend, splashing water at her. Peggy chuckled and splashed her back, nodding.
"Yeah, this is really nice," Peggy said, looking across the water as the sun dipped under the horizon and left them under the light of the stars. After a while more in the water they were getting too cold so they decided it was time to get out. They sat on the dunes with their towels over them like blankets.
They sat in silence (bc someone stole their car radio) for a while, Peggy resting her head on Maria's shoulder.
"Peggy?" Maria cards her fingers through Peggy's hair.
"Mm?"
"I love you," she said. "I love you so much."
Peggy sat up straight and turned to look at Maria, brows furrowed.
"Maria," she takes her Maria's hands in her own. "Is... Is something wrong?"
Maria smiles back at her and kisses her gently. "No... I'm just worried."
Peggy brushes a shock of hair from Maria's face. "Worried about what?"
Maria reached behind her into the beach bag. "That you'll say no."
"To... what?"
Maria smiles a little more and reveals a small black ring case. Peggy searches her face for any hint of an explanation before she looks down to Maria's hands, noticing the case. She gasps, hand over her mouth to hide it.
Maria flips open the case to reveal a silver cushion cut ring, Peggy's eyes filled with tears.
"Margarita Schuyler," Maria started, her voice breaking a little. "Will you marry me?"
Peggy, tears running down her cheeks, nodded. "Yes. Oh my God, Maria, yes!"
Maria takes Peggy's hand and slides the ring onto her finger. "I love you," she said quietly, pulling Peggy into her embrace. Peggy pulled away after a moment, she looked at her ring then back to Maria, her eyes bright, full of joy. She couldn't stop her tears from falling.
"Oh, honey, don't cry." Maria cooed, wiping away Peggy's tears.
"I'm just so happy," she told her, taking Maria's hands in her own. Maria herself felt a bit like crying. She leaned forward slowly and pressed a soft kiss on Peggy's lips.
