You just stood there. Shell shocked is basically the understatement of how you were feeling. You didn't even hear the ruckus around you. You just stood there, staring into nothing. But then Meriden yelled which made you come back to reality.
" No! I refuse! This is an outrage. You told me that I can marry whoever I want whenever I want!" He yelled and you felt your heart swell a little bit knowing that he was thinking of you. His mother then frowned.
"I know my son but I can't help but think that you have no powerful alliance with any other kingdom if you chose out of love. I know I'm taking back my word but please understand my son that it is necessary" the queen sighed. Meriden shook his head and just got up and left. You had the urge to follow him but you couldn't as it would raise suspicions. The king sighed at the queen.
"I told ya he would react this way" was the only thing the king said before eating in silence. The queen frowned and then turned to you.
"[Name] dear what do you think about this?" She asked and you stood there frozen. Really? You are literally asking the one person that is in love with your son and has had a secret affair with him about a festival for a possible marriage?!?! You are screaming with rage on the inside. But on the outside, you responded with this.
"Although you originally promised your son that he would marry whoever he chooses, I understand why you did what you did. He just feels betrayed because of a broken promise , your grace" And with that you gathered the triplets and led them to their tutors. You can't help but think about your lover and hope that he is okay. You had to wait until later.
~time skip~
You made sure that everyone was asleep before you slipped out of the castle to meet Meriden in the secret place. You and Meriden both discovered this place when you first started courting. It was a secret garden that was hidden in the fields and away from the castle, but close enough to get back before someone notices. You silently made your way there with a lamp to guide you and be your light source. You then stopped by an old door that was covered in vines. You moved them and then made your way in.

You then sat on the bench and waited. You waited for Meriden to show up. You both needed to face the situation. I mean you had a feeling that something like this was going to happen but you didn't expect it to be now. You sat there in the bench and started thinking of multiple options. A twig snapped behind you and you turned to the sound. It was Meriden and once you took note of that you relaxed and sighed in relief. You saw him go back and forth in frustration. He was mumbling curses under his breath. You got up and went to him and placed your hands on his cheeks.
"Meriden, my love, please calm down before you do something rash" you softly pleaded and he instantly. He then leaned in your hands and found comfort in them. He then looked at you.
"What would I do without you?" He softly asked. You smiled and took your hand away from his face.
"You would probably go insane or go off in a murderous rage because of your short temper" you coo and he laughs because it is actually true. When you were introduced to him he had a bit of an attitude until you two got together. Especially when it came to his mother. Between him and the queen, when it came to ideas and such, they saw eye to eye. In fact they actually argued for most topics and that dies include marriage. His father usually separated them before things got really intense and shots were fired. And after you two got together it seems that you were kinda like an anchor and you were is source of peace. And honestly that is the cutest thing ever and I'm the author. Wait....got off topic...moving on.
"Well love there is not a day that goes by that I never thanked you for coming in my life. Which is why I am fighting for ya" Meriden says sincerely and you lightly peck him on the lips. You then walked around the garden and he followed you. You thought of other options before the big one. But he seemed to think of it first.
"Run away with me" he said with determination. You looked at him and allowed him to explain himself.
"If we run away, I can love you freely and have a normal life. We are exceptional hunters so we can make a living out of that. We don't have to hide anymore" he exclaimed.
"But at the cost of your connection to the throne. You dreamed of being king one day" you state. He grabbed your hands.
"I'd rather be dirt poor with the woman I love than a king with an arranged marriage" he says and kisses your palms. You weakly smiled and then said something that you would never say.
"And if that doesn't work. I could always be your mistress" you say and he immediately shakes his head.
"I refuse to let you live that kind of life. You need to be put first" he argues.
"I don't care what future lies ahead of me. As long as you're there with me" you argue back. He then hugs you. And for the rest of the night you both decided to settle to continue what you have been doing even during the festival. If that doesn't work you go with Meriden and out of Scotland. And if that doesn't work then he won't fight anymore and you will become the royal mistress.
