Shane's POV.
My weekend was blissful. I was healed, relaxed and full. I just hope that Colt didn't ruin it for me. I was in a really good mood. My first stop was the library to check my emails. If I did this right I could check it at least three times a day.
I logged on and skimmed through my emails and found nothing. I deleted what was in there and logged off. I found a few books checked them out and headed to homeroom. So far so good.
I made it through to lunch and ran back to the library to check my email again. I ran into Courtney on my way.
"Hey, thanks again for the ride the other day." I said sitting at a computer.
"No biggy, my pops wouldn't have let you walk whether we were going to town or not." she said smiling.
"He seems like a good man." I said smiling as I logged on and checked my email.
"He is so is my dad." She said proudly.
"So were you and Colt adopted or did they uses a lady to help them?" I asked and then felt bad for even asking.
"It's complicated. We don't talk about it." she said frowning
"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to pry. I'm so stupid." I said shaking my head.
"Your funny, it's fine. Your not the first person to ask and your not going to be the last." She said laughing.
"Man I'm an idiot. So any other taboo subjects I need to know about?" I asked chuckling.
"Not that I know of. But if you bring one up I'll let you know." She said laughing.
"So what are you doing?" I asked.
"Research for history. And you?" she countered.
"Checking my emails. It's my only way of communication with the outside world." I said.
"If your looking for one from my dad your checking way to early. He never gets on until after lunch. He helps out with the chores most of the time. Friday was a off day for him because I was there. He will get in the office about one or so." She said like it was no big deal. But this helped I would only have to check my emails in the morning and afternoon.
"Thanks. I'm kind of hoping to get the job. I would love more then anything to move out and work." I said trying not to make it seem like I was begging or using her for my benefits. I really liked Courtney.
"Corty, your dad called and said he will be picking you up in about an hour. Colt's back and your Pops wants a family dinner or something." one of Colt's friends said.
"Okay, thanks Max." she said blushing. Someone has a crush on Max.
"Girl you have it bad." I whispered even though Max was out the door and down the hall already.
"Hush, do not." she said turning even redder.
"So explain the red face and the cheesy smile." I said raising my eye brow.
"Okay, okay but you can't tell anyone." She said making me laugh. Who am I going to tell? my wolf friend. No not likely.
"Your secrets safe with me." I said smiling at her.
"Thanks, I better go so I can get my homework for the classes I've missed." She said logging off and heading for the door.
I headed to my next hour but my mind was on the fact the Colt had been gone. Where did he go? I hope he comes to school and has for gotten about me. That would be so nice.
When I walked home I cut into the woods and checked to make sure my parents were still gone. I didn't need any surprises that's for sure. With the coast clear I headed in the house.
I hurried and showered, ate and did my homework before I went to my room to read. I know I had the whole house but I was so afraid they would come home and catch me doing something.
For some reason the feeling of being watched was over whelming tonight. I didn't know where to begin on explaining how I felt. It is kind of like hairs sticking up all over your body. It was creepy yet I felt safe. Weird I know.
I laid in bed until I could t take it anymore. I had to look out the window and see if someone or something was out there. All I saw was three wolves. One huge black one. My gray and black one and the brown one. I waved and went back to reading. It had to be them that was watching me. That's why I felt safe too.
They were still out there by time I went to bed. I couldn't see them but I could feel them. It was nice to know inward protected for once.
Tuesday started the same but my gut told me that I needed to clean up and make the house look like it did Friday morning and to be on my toes. I ran to school and checked my email.
Dear Mr. Watkins,
After reviewing your paperwork we have requested an interview with you tonight after school. Please feel free to come anytime after four.
Thank you,
Jameson Richards.
Holy cow, I have an interview. I hurried up and replied saying I would be there. I was so excited I totally forgot about Colt.
"Hey you, Shane stop." I froze that voice always made shivers run down my spine sometimes good sometimes bad. I held my breath and braced myself for the blow.
"I'm not going to hit you. I just wanted to talk with you. Do you have a minute?" He asked. WTF?
"Um... yeah sure." I said finally. I turned but wouldn't look at him.
"Come on. I got you out of home room and first hour." He said handing me a pass. Shit that's enough time to kill me and bury the body.
"Okay, where too?" I asked.
"Picnic tables by the lunch room." he said walking in front of me. I was so tempted to run and run fast.
"So um.... did you need something? Help with homework? I'm confused." I admitted.
"Just come on." he said opening the door and leading us out to the tables.
Okay I'm here so let either get the beating over with, the humiliation over with or whatever it is your planning." I said with a sigh as I sat on one of the tables.
"Promise I am not here to harm you, humiliate you or anything like that. I asked you out here so I could apologize." He said. To say I was shocked would be an understatement.
"This is a trick right. Your going to get me to fall for this and then make me look like a dumb ass for believing it right. I mean I'm the fag boy that you have picked on, beat up and made the laughing stock for two years. An now out of nowhere you want to apologize. I'm not buying it. I'm sorry if for some bazaar reason this true and I am laughing at you but come on would you honestly believe it?" I asked laughing hard.
"I'm not trying to trick you, humiliate you or hurt you in anyway. From this day forward you will not be harmed by me or any of my friends. I promise you that. I can't make up for the wrong I have done to you. I can't take the hurt away or the scars. I can't make people forget but I can try and make it better." He said. I laughed. I didn't know what else to do.
"Shane, he's telling the truth. It took a bet but he is finally seeing what his actions have done to people. He almost caused our parents to split up because of his actions. We could have lost our home and more. He will not hurt you any more." Courtney said this was shocking to say the least. Do I trust my one and only friend that happens to be the sister of the guy who has helped to make my life hell?
"I believe you, not him." I said not helping the tear that fell from my eyes.
"I know. I will never lie to you. I may not answer all your questions but I will never lie to you." she said and I believed her.
"I believe you." I said smiling a sad smile at her.
"Thanks." She said.
"So I know we are not friends but my dad said my pops wants to see you after four and that you normally walk but dad asked that I pick you up around 4:30 or so and bring you to the office. I will be getting out of baseball practice about then." Colt said sending pleasure shivers down my spine.
"Um... sure. I meet you down the road aways at the old park." I said trying to calm myself.
"Why not at your house?" Courtney asked.
"I'm not going to be home." I said not wanting to give the real reason.
"Oh okay, so um.... did you guys want to head to class?" she asked.
"You two go ahead I'm going to chill out here for a minute or two." I said not knowing what to do.
"Okay see you tonight." Courtney said.
"Yeah, tonight." I said watching her leave.
"I really am sorry." Colt said again making me shiver.
"Okay, I'll forgive you. But I don't think we should jump to being friends. I am good being by myself I have two friends and I'm okay with that." I said trying to be strong and honest.
"I bet your friends are real too." he said sounding sad.
"One is your sister and another is a wolf. So yeah I think so." I said noticing that he froze at the mention of the wolf. Is the big bad Colt afraid of wolves?
"Your not afraid of wolves are you?" he asked.
"Not one bit. I see them all the time. They never bother me and I never bother them. Not much scared me Colt believe it or not." I said standing up.
"I can tell." he said.
"See yeah around 4:30 or so at the old playground." I said before walking off.
"See ya." he said.
I still walked on eggshells at school but nobody paid me any mind. No rude comments not even the word fag was muttered. I was shocked. I hurried out the doors and ran home. This time I skipped the woods and ran right in the front door and into my dad. Shit.
"So you decided to have the run of the house while we were gone did you? didn't think I would notice that food was missing or that you uses my shower did you?" he yelled each work some form of his body made contact with mine either a fist or a kick landed. I never ate any food they left and ever used his shower so I knew he was lying. I also knew my mom wasn't here.
"You thought you was so slick didn't you, fag?" he asked. This time he kicked me in the face. I was seeing spots and my hearing was fading but the hit kept coming.
Soon the hit stopped but I honestly don't know when or why. I hurt so bad it didn't matter. I let darkness come an take me hoping that this was the end in some funny way. Good bye Courtney good bye my little wolf I will watch over you.
