So today a thing happened that was extraordinarily unexpected and a tad shocking to me.It also has nothing to do with this fanfic or Wattpad, I just think it's a story I ought to share.
Our year group went to a theme park for our end of year trip. We only had two and a half hours in the park because our school is utterly shite at organising good trips, half the time the trips are made enjoyable by the company rather than the actual activities.
Anyway, my friends and I were all queuing for about forty five minutes to go on an eagle's claw type ride. We eventually got on it and since there was eight of us we couldn't all sit next to each other, to solve the problem MrsAFelton and I sat away from the other six.
The ride itself made us both feel really ill (which was actually quite funny because the whole time we were just cursing very loudly and complaining, we like to complain. We're very British in that sense.) When it was over we got off the ride and one of the members of our squad was feeling rather disorientated so another one of my friends grabbed hold of her hand. They sort of staggered off the ride holding on to each other tightly and giggling. To their surprise, of these girls (along with her group) waiting in the FastPass line yelled something along the lines of "dirty lesbians" at them. If you really want to understand how utterly stupid this young lady was, try to imagine a snooty sounding, broadly Yorkshire chav.
Upon being informed of this I grabbed MrsAFelton as we collected our bags and we proudly marched past them holding hands, to which they responded with more swearing an general abuse. By this point, the rest of the group had picked up on what was happening and we all proceeded to grab hold of each other's hands and yell phrases associated with LGBT+ rights in response.
We all found the whole fiasco hilarious, the majority of us are straight however support the LGBT+ community through and through. We all continued to shout as we walked away, the eight of us laughing hysterically as they got on the ride, it seemed so ridiculous that anyone could be so petty as to shout at strangers. I distinctly remember a chubby girl from the band of twats shouting "Dirty Fags!" at us as the ride began for the second time.
Why, in this day and age, is holding hands with your friend of the same gender considered shameful? Why is the word lesbian considered an insult? Why do people, think it's okay to use the word 'fag'? For those of you that are unaware, the word 'fag' in this context refers to gay people (and others) that were tied to the bottom of pyres and burnt alive for their sexuality, to call someone by this term is entirely disgusting.
So please, never be one of those people that is too ignorant to understand the harshness of their words. Homophobia should not be ignored or in any way brushed off, have your beliefs about what is wrong or right if you must, but never act in a way that is so blatantly rude or make assumptions about people you know nothing about.
Thank you for reading.
P.S. The song in the multimedia is 'Runaways' by The Killers. It is there because I was listening to it whilst writing this Author's Note and I forgot how bloody brilliant it is. I literally love this song so much. Like, wow, it's ace. So I'm forcing it upon you all, you must listen to it. All of you.
