// "Grief Chapter" Mother Mother

It had been noted across the hospital that it was a rough week for the surgical department... a death of a resident who had been beloved by it's members to a tragic incident that none of them. To make matters worse, an MCE had interrupted the funeral, one that the chief of surgery had been unable to get out of bed to even attend.
Loss was one thing... but seeing a bloody face every time she attempted to close her eyes was something that was haunting her more than usual... it wasn't as if she didn't have PTSD for a reason, but something about losing a young man she had mentored and seen fall in love and on the verge of finally getting the happiness he deserved... it stung. Somehow it had taken every bit of life out of her body to think of having to see his body...

She sat at a table with a coffee, though it was growing cold as she couldn't stomach anything... she still was feeling numb, the medicine wasn't helping the way it had last time..
She took a breath before giving a polite smile as she looked up at him,
          "Hey, how've you been?"

// Okay, so like basic info. St Bonaventure had patient 0 zombie infection outbreak in California, they're now six months later with a camp of survivors built into one of the national forests with an artisan well. The camp is run by ex-doctors/medical staff and has three "quarantine pits" for travelers who exit camp or are new to wait out the 14 day incubation period of the zombie virus. (because it's based on an actual infection AU I wrote) Lim is immune(?) to the virus and is using one of her former coworkers, Asher Wolke, as a living test subject in an attempt to find a cure

It wasn't uncommon to find the ex-trauma surgeon wandering around the open pits in the ground. Deep crevices in the earth that had been built to protect those within the camp. She had stopped to fix the scrap armor that surrounded her neck... even with the faded bite mark on her arm that had never led to an infection, she still wore it to keep her partner's worries at ease. She looked up at the sky... while barely peeking through the canopy of trees, she can see the light from the moon... how could it be so peaceful with the world the way it had become.
She heard a noise and put a hand on the knife she kept on her, looking around...
          "Oh, sorry. It's just you."

The black ooze in truth gave Matthew nightmares, he’d wake up drenched in sweat from dreaming that the ooze was pouring out of his eyes.

He then again shuddered, remembering Park.

“Just shoot me.” He said sharply, signaling the end of their discussion about it. His face relaxed as he put his gun in the nearest holster, tossed Lim the tourniquet before grabbing a machete and chopping the infected arm off.

He ignored Asher’s screams as he kicked the arm away with his steel toed boot. They would burn the damn thing come daylight outside the camp.

// that was a feedback I got from someone else too, lol. And I guess I should be clear, Asher isn’t infected. The infection has a prognosis of about a week before you reach a stage where the body is completely rotting. She’s running tests on him because he’s a healthy person willing to be one (they’ve got a weird power dynamic in the AU because he’s doing it in hopes of helping her as she kind of descends to paranoia and grief)

The former resident was kneeled next to her, puking up… something that looked like the black ooze that sometimes beaded the eye on the side of Lim’s face where she’d been bit months ago. Their latest test, while it luckily hadn’t completely knocked him out, made him sick to his stomach… At least it was a positive change since the last one.

“Or I can do what I did to Park.” She said, bending down to the younger man to offer him a scrap of cloth to wipe his face, “Cut off the infected limb.” It had proved effective after all, when she’d cut off the guard leader’s arm following him being bit trying to stop Audrey from getting too close to one of their former friends who had entered the rot stage of infection…

//why am I getting the last of us vibes? Lol

Shortly after everything started, Matthew’s sordid past came out and after finding out about Lim’s immunity, he had taken the role of her ‘unofficial’ protector, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him hanging around one of the pits.

He hummed in agreement and hostered his gun, ready to shoot Asher if they managed to escape before they could infect the others in the camp.

Asher gave what sounded like a pitiful moan as Audrey did..something to it. He honestly had no idea what she did, Biology was never his strong suit and he shuddered.

“Hey Doc, if I ever get infected, please just shoot me and put me out of my misery.” He drawled before grabbing a stale granola bar from one of the pockets of his cargo pants.

"You wouldn't happen to know if the heat is going to make us lose power, do you IT?" she asked, noticing him as she walked into the elevator. Her hair was tied back and she, much like a majority of the staff, was wearing the most professional attempts at dealing with the fact that a heatwave had warmed up the whole city to an uncomfortable level. She leaned against the inside of it, feeling a little cooler against the metal.

Audrey nodded her head as he spoke, fanning herself with her hand, "Well, it's not the critical care units I'm worried about, it's losing power to the OR. That could be dangerous..." she mumbles, "I'm happy they did fix up the system, we were not prepared for that earthquake a few years ago and it wouldn't keep up for almost a week while we were still fighting our way through the aftermath." she shakes her head,
"Well... good luck, it's probably hotter down there then it is up here, isn't it?"

Matthew was wearing the most professional outfit he could wear during a heatwave and was sweating buckets.

“It shouldn’t, there’s at least seven back up generators including a few that are specialised to keep life support systems running. You shouldn’t be too concerned about that. According to the maintenance crew though, a lot of the ACs have broken in the hospital, barring the few servers we have onsite because they are linked to a different system. However, I’d strongly advise not going in the server room, it’s cramped and there’s too many wires.”

Matthew began gulping ice water from his flask in an effort to cool down.

The surgeon tilted her head slightly, holding onto her cane as she offered a gentle and polite smile, "Oh, hello. Can I help you?"

@softtelekinetic
"I hope so too." she seemed to shrug off his awkwardness as she didn't seem to think too much about their interaction, figuring people were always a bit awkward on their first days... she had apparently been, though she could never quite could remember her first day at St Bonaventure anymore.

She wished him well on 'his journey to the dark basement,' before turning and walking back to her office, though from behind, it was all the more clear that the surgeon walked with a limp, as if she couldn't quite hold her fully body weight as she walked.
She had stopped to talk to one of the nurses, the two leaning on the railing that lined the side, allowing one to see all the way to the ground floor if they looked over the edge.

Matthew smiled at when she tapped on the sign and nodded eagerly.

“Thank you so much! I hope see you around, hopefully not in your operating theatre, Dr ….” He trailed off, after making his awkward joke, cursing himself for not asking her name.

Hell whilst attempting to style his curly riot of hair, he had mentally scripted an entire hypothetical intro conversation and he had promptly forgot it and been weird and awkward.

He internally grimaced, god he would be replaying this conversation like a broken record at random moments in the future.

He quickly began shuffling towards the elevator in a bid to cut the interaction short and not make it go longer than it needed to.

She laughed a little at his comment, holding onto her cane as she walked, her right side supported as her stronger leg led... and she focused up at him, "I am the chief of surgery, attending trauma surgeon for 10, chief of surgery for three. Resident here for five before all the fancy titles.... as for liking it here, I would jump ship, but I've enjoyed my staff, been lucky enough with them." she stopped when she got to the board, tapping her navy-painted nail on the sign, "There it is, IT, level B... take this elevator down."

"Somebody, help!!" Will shouted as he coughed up, covering his mouth with his sleeve and looking around the foggy hallway before continuing his way outside yet he always seemed to find more bodies, checking their state and realising they've been all dead from the fall of columns the Earthquake caused in the place

@surgical_jock It took a few minutes for Matthew to pull himself together, he felt like a zombie as he started his motorbike and he drove at such a high speed. The engineer was on the knife's edge of spiralling into a full-blown panic attack as he drove at frightening fast speeds.

He heard vaguely human shouts as he sped down the lane. He stopped his motorbike and pondered for a second. Against his better judgement, he sped towards the hospital.

"Is anyone there?" Matthew yelled as he drove further into the parking lot. He kept yelling 'anyone?' and 'hello?' until his voice was hoarse.

He was about to yell again until he saw a figure moving towards him and his motorbike. He tensed, he didn't know whether it was human or like the others he had encountered.

            Well he'd soon find out.

"Is this your way of dismissing the time ive spent working out your treatment route?! Ive checked over fifty studies to treat you by surgical plan that wouldnt requires constant biological control and you just leave on revers? I thought better of you, de Luca"

He snapped with frown upon his features

Matthew let himself be dragged to the car. The unnatural way his arm was bent would have sent anyone else screaming in pain, but Matthew remained quiet. His arm was ricocheting in pain, but he didn’t voice it because voicing it would mean that the other was right and he was, but Matthew stubbornly didn’t want to admit it.

He propped himself against the window and took a few deep breaths before closing his eyes to stop any tears from leaking.

He was miserable and in pain and in a car with a person that he didn’t want to be near right now.

He faintly heard the car start up, but didn’t say anything. He briefly considered the merits of hacking off his arm and having a prosthetic.

He was about to voice the idea to the other before shutting his mouth, but he was still angry with the other.

He kneeled down, turning on the flashlight with a huff.
"Follow the light with your eyes."
He commanded as he moved the light, then turned it off, taking off his jacket and throwing it around the other's shoulders, narrowing eyes at the other's complaints and taking a deep breathe.

"You're not the only case on my plate, but Im sorry, I wasnt there for you. This is my job, it's not personal, but i needed to be invested in this one. What you have done, was plain stupid, considering your broken arm.
Now we'll have to start all over. Don't you see it's gonna get you back in the hospital anyways? You're risking more complicated fracture here. Fracture, that might not heal this time by this reckless behaviour and it's gonna ruin your life in the final and i dont want that, because I care!"

He grunted, gripping the bridge of his nose and taking a deep breathe.
He then gently removed his clothis, observing his hand and giving small sigh before grabbing a, nearby two branches and taking off his shirt, tearing it and attaching it to the branches with tight knots before fixing Will's arm with it.

"This will have to do till we get to the hospital. The ambulance wont arrive. They're all busy at the moment. A pláně crashed hour ago and youd know if you were laying in the hospital. My car is over there, let's go."

He said disappointedly before helping Matthew up

Matthew glared at him as he lay on the pavement waiting for the ambulance to arrive as he held a bar rag with his good arm.

“Well maybe if you showed up earlier, maybe you could have saved your precious work Doctor!” He spat, “You left me waiting for you on my birthday! I know you’re like a resident and all but I called the reception and the receptionist told me you went home hours ago. What the help was I supposed to think! And sorry that my friends cheered me up with a vintage motorcycle and I rode it with my broken arm, which you and your superiors called by the way, I mean it wasn’t recommended but it wasn’t a hard no.”

After the rant, he looked even more upset.
“Go away Will.” He then quietly muttered. He felt betrayed by the other, he really thought they had something, they were great friends and it seemed like it was going to become something more very soon, but now it wasn’t.
