I was reading Admist Silver and Rust on reddish and I just wanted to vent my observations. I guess some would say if you don’t like it, don’t read it but silence never get’s one far. The fact remains that I really enjoyed the book but the subtle rape theme doesn’t sit right with me. We are simply supposed to accept that Colton almost raped a girl, while mental illness is real it makes no sense that Addison would urge Emma to take him back after already being violent in bed. What happens next time he actually ends up raping her, because a relationship isn’t in immediate relation to consent? Also how Addison practically got raped by Mason despite how one would like to interpret it. It’s not a hard guess to figure out that they most likely will still end up together. Despite how people deal with their own struggles and misery it should never be portrayed as something other people close to them have to endure. Especially if it lashes out on them in that very manner.
Thank you for your feedback. Your concern is definitely warranted. I'm not sure how far you are in the book but in the second part, Colton is gone and that it is most definitely because of his behavior toward Emma. As far as Mason goes, YES it was also completely wrong but he has his own issues and has not properly addressed them and a large portion of the book consists of him facing and dealing with those issues so that he can became a better man—a mentally stable man who doesn't behave in that manner. I don't condone rape and I make it evident that Colton and Mason both face the repercussions of their actions because you are right, being in a relationship or even in a marriage DOES NOT CONSTITUTE CONSENT. As you said, if you found the book offensive, you don't have to read it. However, my book touches up on incredibly controversial issues but I do it in a way that does not glamorize them. People make mistakes. My characters are incredibly flawed but I write about their personal journeys and I like to include the good, the bad and the ugly. thank you <3
