there weren't many things that could make the elf stop in his tracks, but being snuck up on was a rare thing not many could do. quite honestly, it pulled at something deep inside that unsettled him far more than most things ever have in recent years. the worst part? had it not been for the flashing shadows made by the lightning he wouldn't even have noticed. this is what he gets for putting all his things down. even if they were in reach, going for something sharp would be a good excuse for whatever was stalking to attack.
he couldn't even glimpse at it. they were smart enough or lucky enough to approach from his blind side. his jaw tightened, every muscle in his body poised for either flight or fight though his hands never reached for a weapon. instead, he stilled—ears twitching, listening, weighing the distance between himself and the presence.
"that’s close enough," he said at last, his voice even but edged like a blade unsheathed. he didn’t dare turn yet, not until he knew what manner of thing stood behind him. rain pounded against the stone, thunder rolling in the silence that followed. a slow breath left him, steadying the unease that crawled beneath his skin. "if you mean to strike then do it. otherwise, speak your purpose."
