In the bloodthirsty kingdom of Raiparid, everyone is trained from birth to be a fighter. In more modern times, the family duels are treated as a sport where everyone in the community gathers to spectate. 24-year-old Kenon Slately has been training for months in preparation for his duel to win his love, Valerie Fromm's, hand in marriage. On the day of his duel, a commoner no one has seen before steps forward and announces herself as Audrid Ryne. She demands a duel with Kenon's family for his hand in marriage. The city officials are forced by the ancient laws their modern tradition originated from to allow the fight to happen; and even worse for Kenon, to declare the proposal legally binding if she wins. Determined to figure out the dubious motivations Audrid might have, Kenon finds himself fighting for more than just love.

A comfortable silence enveloped Nick's room. Matt took in the scent of his older brother- a welcoming vanilla pleasantly mixed with mint.
