A complex love story with an uncertain ending; it's complicated.
Merie and Franklin don't end up
together.
They drift apart over six years.
Merie's life is tough-she works double shifts, saves for art school, avoids love, and keeps things casual, but struggles with her relationship with her rich, somewhat sex-buddy sort of girlfriend and her sweet tooth for expensive lingerie and wine. She remains broke and has only ever loved one guy she wants to forget, like her deceased ex.
Franklin's life differs.
He's just settled into what he's certain is a committed relationship but hasn't really come out officially; he doesn't feel he really has to, and, well, they were all bound to find out anyway about him cheating. Facing awkwardness with family, who believe one thing, and friends, especially past lovers, who know another, he tries not to think too much about the fact that his current partner is the same sex as him. His father has always been supportive, but a little too much, and all Franklin wants is to succeed independently, avoiding family money. Still, he has to face his ex-girlfriend because they own a business together; she isn't over their breakup.
One morning, everything changes.
Franklin isn't good at committing to one partner, though he appreciates the idea of long-term very much and doesn't want to follow in his mother's footsteps-until he meets the girl who broke his heart years ago and left with no explanation.
It feels like yesterday.
Merie plans to avoid Franklin completely; she needs to. Especially since Franklin's family status got in the way and his world almost destroyed hers, along with her heart. Not to mention her hopes.
She regrets drinking immediately after she wakes up, tangled in the sheets in Franklin's bed; old feelings stir.
