Charlie was warned not to join. But how could she not? Lives depended on her being good at her job - one mistake could change people's lives indefinitely. She had been warned about them, those who it was her duty to save. 'I'm not like that', 'It won't happen to me'. She had said with the utmost certainty. Charlie could have been right, but how can you disagree with someone who although you have never met, you feel like you have spent a lifetime with?
