Hope is a free spirit, as others may say. Happy go lucky and never takes anything seriously. His father left them before she was even born and mother died right after she graduated. With literally nobody to stop her, she does everything she wants. The only thing she has to think about is "insurance", just incase something bad happens to her in the future. She have to make sure that she can pay for the hospital bills and that she won't be die inside her apartment and no one would even notice her corpse there. Basically, yes, she is preparing to live her life forever alone. On the other hand, Marcus is one of the elite billionaire batchelors today. He always do things to impress his father and to make his own mark in the industry. He is bound for a fix marriage but he doesn't mind since its all for busineess, besides he is to be wed to a fine young bachelorette. Slick and presentable, what more can he ask for a wife. Love is not even an issue. He hates Hope for one. He is irritated in how much frivolous she is to him and to all the other customers in the golf club he usually plays.
