Izzat, or honor, is a concept taught far and wide around the world. It is the perception of respect that many desire which they define as honor. However, the practice of "honor" varies greatly from one country to another and in some instances, "honor" ends up destroying lives. On my many travels, I have seen people embrace the concept of "honor" by persecuting those around them. To make themselves feel important and respected, they stripped away another's "honor." During my recent trip to South Asia, I interviewed five individuals who had been accosted and forever changed by the concept of "honor" in their country. These are true stories with locations and identities that have been changed. I must stress that I mean no disrespect by writing their stories, not to them or their country. I must also stress that these are only a minuscule fraction of people that have been affected by the concept of "honor." Some of the imagery by the interviewees may be distressing to some.
