People experience many things in college: adult life, love, education, sexual experimenting, etc. Arthur just wanted a degree so he could earn a decent pay wage; Alfred wanted adventure; Francis wanted meaning; Matthew wanted his own life. In the end, they (and their classmates) all got more than they bargained for.
