The only reason they took Clint in was for the cheque they received from the government, so ultimately his birthday wasn't something they celebrated or kept track of. That wasn't so bad most days, he could survive until he was eighteen and out of the system. But then one poem, one admitted secret, lead to a world of heartache, and suddenly being alone was dangerous. When you're alone, there's no one to stop you from making a horrible mistake. Dimitri Langford just wanted to have fun, to hang out with friends and be liked by everyone. He didn't always like what his friends did, but he told himself not to get involved. Having his friends like him was more important than standing up for some random kid who looked and smelled like he was homeless, and had social skills of that of a mouse.
