Prologue: The House on the Other Side of the Tracks

Rachel likes photographs because you can't tell by looking at a photo that anything is wrong with her or her family: The grief cannot be seen behind the glistening smiles. Makeup and photo editing hide the exhaustion caused by not sleeping. And Rachel's ears look like anybody else's.

Rachel is pushed beyond many of her comfort zones when a new renter moves into the basement apartment. Are his intentions to befriend her sincere? Or does he only pity her like everyone else does?

When communication is strenuous, they must ask themselves: is their love worth the effort?
