In monarchies, the general rule of thumb is to have at least two children: the Heir and the Spare. The Heir is the future leader, and the Spare is there in case the Heir falls through.

Arden has spent the past eighteen years as the Spare, left to do as she wishes with minimal security and a trust fund.
