How real is the bestfriend situation between a girl and a guy.

I'm not saying that it is impossible
but most of the time
the situation is exactly like this :

A guy and a girl can be just friends but one point or another, one may fall to other or they might fall for each other.
Maybe temporarily.. Maybe at the wrong time.. Maybe too late or maybe forever?
