Caleb hated the fact that he was falling for his best friend. Aside from the stress of unrequited love and the issue of Bobby's "ex", the mere notion of his best friend was enough to rip his heart a new one. He was lucky that Bobby was far enough to avoid accidentally-or purposely-breaking Caleb's heart.
