There was a sheet of paper that was face down on the desk in front of me and a shiny, black pen. We were seated in a large marble hall, spaced out evenly. The short man cleared his throat at the front of the room, and told us to start writing. There was a shuffle as everyone turned over the paper in front of them, but no one talked. I looked down at mine and began writing. Name: Artemis Gray Job: Inspector Age: 16 Sector: Water Height: 5'8" Eye colour: Blue Hair colour: Brown Hierarchical Position: High Family Mother: June Gray Age: deceased Father: Harrison Gray Age: deceased Legal Guardian/s: Robert Grey Relation to you: Grandfather Halfway through, I looked up to see everyone's heads bent down and studying their paper. I might spend the rest of my career with one of these people, I thought, scanning the faces. I might hate them or love them. Who knows? --- In another world far away there lives a girl called Artemis Gray. At sixteen, she was nothing special. Just a girl, going to start her job, just like the millions of other sixteen year olds in Averin. True, she was from a high family. And true, she was going to start one of the most coveted jobs in the country that only five people got. And yes, she did have three powers, unlike the usual one or two. But she could have been a nobody. Just another one of the centuries of inspectors before her. But then, I guess she always had had that something about her.
