PROLOGUE: Moonlight

Twenty years ago, Albrecht Laudon lead a rebellion to depose King Everett from the Elysian throne. Now the once-opulent nation sits on the brink of destruction, and the same nobles who put Albrecht on the throne must decide how best to salvage the kingdom.

Zachary Wentworth is the nation's minister of finance, the patriarch of the realm's most powerful family of bankers, and the man tasked with preventing financial ruin in the face of Albrecht's ineffectual rule. But Zachary wants to do more than that: he wants his younger son, Alexander, to sit the throne.
