Cassie is a Four, just one step away from the top, from being respected and fed properly. Her father died at a young age, and she was an only child. Cassie lives with her mother and owns a bakery with her mom. Cassie has a 'group' of friends that she is content with, all she could ever wish for is to be able to know that she would survive this year.

One night Cassie is dared by her friends to enter the Selection, she was never planning on doing that. Of course she wouldn't get picked, never.
