Looking for meaning in life is always difficult, but as a 25-year-old married lawyer from St. Louis, Ellison Tate finds the prospect of meaning more difficult than others. In an attempt to rid herself of an abusive relationship, she flees her life to a little town called Everpine Springs in Alabama, where she gets a job as a nanny to a ten year old boy named Patrick who has left his parents to live with his Uncle Ren, who turns out to be the town's general practitioner.
