Chapter One - Delayed Gratification

"You know, Scarlett, you're so incredibly smart. Maybe you would fit in a little more somewhere else. I really want you to succeed. Find a place where you can be comfortable," she said as her light green eyes, decked in Lancome eyeliner and mascara, stared at me from under perfectly razor-trimmed layers of thick, brown hair. My heart bottomed out from my rib cage. I knew what that suggestion meant. My days here at this firm were numbered.

She flashed me that smug, Harvard-girl smile that only a mid-lifer at the height of her career could possess. She enjoyed this role of playing God. Of watching her underlings squirm, while she decided who rises and who falls.

So what would I do?
