The Knight In Shining Armor

" No, No, No, this can't be happening. I can't lose you now!" The desperation in my voice is evident, even to those who do not know me. Cavallo, or The Knight In Shining Armor, my forever faithful gelding, was heaving, each breath more strained than the last. His final breaths were full of pain, and I knew he was going to be gone. Hugging his neck tight, I cried into his dark mane. I felt no shame at my performance, I only felt grief. How could I have let this happen? With the little strength he had left, Cavallo wrapped his big, beautiful neck around my waist and nickered softly for the last time. I cradled his head and watched as his eyes slowly dimmed, and finally as his soft lids closed, concealing his thoughtful brown eyes. " I love you, Cav." That final whisper was for him, and him only. I know he heard me, because his head then shifted not by me or any other force besides his own, until his nose rested on my heart. I know he loved me too.
