There was once a woman who planted a barleycorn, not much unlike the ones you'd find in a farmer's field. Very soon there grew a large handsome flower, something like a tulip in appearance, but with its leaves tightly closed as if it were still a bud.

The woman kissed its blue leaves every morning and every night until one day the flower opened. To her surprise, upon the green velvet stamens, sat a very delicate and graceful little man. He was scarcely half as long as a thumb, so the woman called him tiny Lou.
