Hidden Afflictions

The shadows of our past, like a sadistic snake, constricts around our hearts at its very mention. When we dwell on it, we give it the power to control our current and future relationships in our lives. This could be avoiding a lover, pushing away family members or falling under addiction once again because the past whispers lies into your ear about your unworthiness, how you are defective and too damaged. Then society begins to feed those lies with their misunderstanding of your afflictions, until the point that you have to hide them.
I wish it was as easy as shoving the past in a box and throwing it off a bridge or telling it to shut its fat mouth, but sometimes its not, sometimes there are scars that are just too deep...
