The plane lurched and we moved toward the runway. I felt a sudden tension on my left and I turned to see him clutching the arm rests and his jaw was clenched. I raised my eyebrows at him but he didn't look at me, just stared at the seat in front of him. "First time flier?" I asked. He didn't move but the shift in his jaw was answer enough. The plane began to accelerate and his knuckles turned white on the armrest. Reluctantly I placed my hand over his and instantly his eyes snapped to mine and I almost pulled away. Almost. "Look out the window," I said gesturing behind me. Slowly, he pulled his eyes away from mine and focused on the world speeding by. "Imagine that you are riding astride a dragon. He's not a smooth beast, nor is he very quiet," As if on cue, the plane shuttered as we accelerated, gaining height. His eyes clouded over and his hands relaxed. "But he's reliable. He won't let you fall." His eyes snapped back to mine and his jaw relaxed. The corner of my lips twitched and I pulled away, balling my hands in my lap as I watched the clouds roll by. --- Love can have you gliding along with the clouds, effortlessly floating like there's nothing in the world that can hurt you. Adelaide Brown knows that's a lie more than anyone else, and she's determined to keep herself out of loves entangles after her past has shown her there's nothing harmless about it.
