Exercise 1 - Blackout

I treated myself to a bundle of online writing courses, and would love some feedback on the exercises, if anyone would be so kind. I am assuming, so far, that most of the exercises will be short and likely not be very connected, but I hope I manage to entertain enough that it's not a jarring read. From here, I hope to progress to writing some flash fiction, then eventually longer works.
