Pete just wants all the attention off him, like most antisocial teenagers. When he sees Patrick he realizes that he isn't like the other guys at his school, he clearly likes Patrick. But Pete is suffering from abuse from his dad and himself, and all he can do is wonder: why would Patrick pay any attention to the emo kid who lives down the street? Why would Patrick ever pay any attention to Pete?
